Universal Pictures announced this week a release date of June 13th 2014 for the new Jurassic Park 4. Yahoo.com also reports that the latest installment in the successful franchise will be shot in 3D. I wonder if Steven Spielberg who helmed the first two pictures in the franchise and who as reported will stay on as producer (no director has been announced) will decide to shoot the dinosaurs in the new HFR 3D format. There’s been mixed reviews on the new high-speed format. Some critics of HFR 3D say the picture is just too sharp, giving the film a soap opera look. But the benefits of a brighter picture, less blur, a more stable image may be the wave of future 3D movies. James Cameron is filming the new Avatar sequels in the new HFR 3D format. HFR 3D stands for high film rate 48 frames per second as opposed to the old Hollywood standard of 24 frames per second. 3D is the perfect format to shoot the action adventure, sci-fi film in.
Spielberg, Universal…if you reading this take a look at some of the IMAX 3D nature movies, we the 3D fans want stuff in our face. Ok look… not necessarily the gratuitous jumping out at the audience type 3D…but let’s say you have an exploding volcano, why not immersive the audience in smoke, ash, sparks, etc. “slow mo”…have it float around the audience. A jungle scene…”falling leafs” have the leafs float around the audience…that’s the magic that’s been missing from a lot of the recently released 3D movies, including the Hobbit, Life of Pi, Hugo, all great movies, incredible film makers, there were a few moments of good 3D but not enough to want me to keep my glasses on through the whole movie. Some of the films really missed, in my opinion incredible opportunities to take advantage of 3D as a tool to truly immerse the audience. Take a look at James Cameron’s Avatar. The magical forest scene…that scene captured the kid in all of us…it was magical.
