Spiderman to Be Released in IMAX and IMAX 3D

Posted on 28 January 2016 by admin

Sony’s reboot of Spiderman will be released in IMAX and IMAX 3D. The currently untitled Spider-Man movie is part of a deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Sony recently announced that the release date has been moved to July 7, 2017. 3D filmmakers should take a look at what the VR guys are doing with their projects. 3D is a viable tool but still has been in my opinion widely under utilized and also used to cautiously. Audiences want an visual immersive experience. I think as we see virtual reality games and content hit the main stream market place, film makers will again learn from the video game market on how best to utilize the 3D format.

VR at Sundance

Posted on 04 November 2015 by admin

Virtual Reality seems to be taking the world by storm these days. All the major electronics and content players seem to be on board from Sony, to Microsoft, HTC, Samsung,
Apple, Universal and a host of others. We can’t forget to mention Mark Zuckerberg and the Oculus Rift headset that seems to have started the VR craze.
Jaunts involvement with Sundance for all practical purposes will also help with future functionality and design of future VR hardware, great move. Also a great way to bring awareness to Jaunt in what will soon become a very competitive market.
The Sundance Institute has launched a program just for VR filmmakers. The iconic filmmaking lab has launched a new VR program called “Sundance Institute New Frontier Program”/ “Jaunt VR Residency Program”.
The program is in partnership with VR firm Jaunt studios. The program will run for six-months with resources and equipment from Jaunt and possibly VR head gear from Oculus but that wasn’t mentioned in the online release. Jaunt will get direct feedback form the filmmakers at the newly created VR lab. I’m sure all the major players will stand by the ready to donate equipment and resources if necessary to the “New Frontier program.” Immersive 3D, that’s what we at NowPlaying3D and consumers are really looking for in entertainment these days. 2-D and UHD -4K is nice, but there is no comparison to great 3D like in Robert Zemeckis recent film “The Walk”. I personally think it was one of the best uses of 3D since Avatar. 3D and VR is “The Future of Entertainment®”.
More when I get it.

Hulu and Netflix to Launch Virtual-Reality Apps

Posted on 30 September 2015 by admin

Facebook’s innovative new product “The Oculus”, will usher in an immersive new viewing experience. The Future of Entertainment®. I remember talking about the “Oculus Rift” to a few kids, they said, “no one will wear goggles while playing games.” I said wait and see! While monitoring the 3D Entertainment market, I’ve notice 3D Printing and 3D VR gaining a lot of momentum. The Virtual Reality content makers seem to be making the type of content that 3D filmmakers are capable of but are not doing. They are cheating audiences out of a truly immersive experience. Studios are also leaving millions of dollars on the table from consumers who are looking for that magical 3D movie experience that we last saw in James Cameron’s 2010 “Avatar”.
RealD, theater owners, studios, do you guys want to increase revenue at 3D movies? Then stop making the movies so dam flat!
I was fortunate enough recently, to demo a Samsung VR headset and it was a cool immersive experience. Good VR, is what I think good 3D film should look like. Film makers/stereographers, you need to put the viewer in the action of the movie! Not outside like they are looking through a fishbowl.
Game developers set the bar for filmmakers once before and now all tent pole movies are like a giant video game. I guess they will do it again, as I’m sure VR and 3D film-makers will cross paths and hopefully we’ll have 3D and VR content that is worth paying a premium for. I know it’ll happen…it’s just taking such a long time for the studios to get it right. 3D and VR is “The Future of Entertainment®”.
Ok, back to the breaking news! Variety announced Netflix and Hulu have plans to launch new virtuality-reality apps. The apps will allow viewers to watch VR and 3D content on the Oculus headset or on the Samsung VR headset. I’m sure it’ll be compatible with Microsoft’s as well as Sony’s Morpheus VR headset.
You’ll also be able to watch shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black per CNN on the new Samsung Gear VR.

Everest 3D

Posted on 03 September 2015 by admin

Everest is set to premiere September 2nd in Imax 3D as the opener of the Venice film festival. The film, being released in IMAX 3D, is the true story based on the tragic 1996 Mount Everest climbing expedition.
Reviewers are praising the work of director Baltasar Kormakur for bringing this timely disastrous story to the big screen. (Check out the trailer) more videos will be added to our “YouTube Channel”
Everest 3D stars, Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sam Worthington, Jason Clarke and John Hawkes. The Everest film is a perfect story for the 3D format, I haven’t seen the movie yet but I have watched a few clips from the movie. The scenes I saw were a perfect fit for the 3D format, snow wind ice particles blowing, now if the filmmakers would just bring those elements out into the audience, true 3D fans might just have a truly enjoyable 3D experience!
Everest was shot in Nepal and the Italian Alps. Look for a wide release in the US on September 18th.

A massive and immersive 3D LED video wall made up of more than two million LED lights sets the backdrop for the Newman Center’s latest musical production. The 3D video wall was developed by a Chinese professor and the technology was brought to the United States by
Dr Dennis Law the show’s writer and producer. The Terracotta Warriors 3D show takes place at the University of Denver’s Newman Center and runs through Sept. 6. Terracotta Warriors 3D tells the classic story
of the Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who ruled between 220 and 210 B.C. and whose tomb contains a life-size army of Terracotta Warriors seen through the eyes of his eunuch.
Audience members will be required to wear 3D glasses to get the full effect. I wonder if they are RealD supplied 3D glasses? Hmm…I’ll try to find out the type they used for the show. The cast members include both American dancers as well as a troope of 50 Chinese performers from overseas.

Rembrandt 3D Launches 4K Glasses-Free 3D Screens

Posted on 05 July 2015 by admin

Rembrandt 3D recently displayed its new line of Glasses-Free 3D 4K Full HD Displays at the Three Rivers Technology Exhibition in Pittsburg Pennsylvania last week.
The event was highlighted by a demo of their new Special Edition glasses-free 3D 3DAS 10-inch Android Tablet which played content from Emmy award-winning filmmaker Ken Love’s new Frank Lloyd Wright Film, “Fallingwater in 3D, the House Tour.”
Rembrandt 3D CEO Steven Blumenthal said “It is by far the best 3D we have ever converted for 3D auto stereoscopic viewing and I believe that is the most picture-perfect 3D ever seen without glasses. (NP3D) That is a very bold statement, we at® would love the opportunity to demo the the new device first hand. We have been following the 3D display market for the past five years, pst “Avatar” and have seen most of the auto-stereo displays on the market. None were perfect but many were getting close to a distortion free auto-stereo 3D display. We’re eagerly awaiting the picture perfect glasses-free 3D display. The market is ready for such a device as well. There is plenty of new 3D content and a ton of new 3D contentment in the pipeline as well, so such a device would be welcomed with open arms.
In a recent article by “Digital Signage”, CEO Steve Blumenthal claims, the 3D shots are crystal clear. No ghosting, artifacts, sweet spots or image deterioration. Rembrandt claims no gimmicks or add-ons such as head tracking. (NP3D) Wow…ok, now I really have to see this device. The new 3DS by Nintendo is a big improvement from their earlier 3DS glasses free gaming device released a few years ago. Nintendo was able to improve on the previous 3DS by adding head tracking to position the viewer in the correct viewing position. It’s great news for the 3D display industry. More when we get it.
