The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Behind the Scenes

Part two of Peter Jacksons The Hobbit should bring in an estimate $73million for the opening weekend per Deadline.com
We caught an early sneak peak in Hollywood California at the TLC Chinese theater. The attending crowd reaction was quite positive to the epic 3D action adventure fantasy film.
We were on hand to really check out the 3D which looked pretty good. There were a couple of scenes that need just a little more pop, like the “snowfall” scene. The practical sets were amazing.
There were some moments in the film that I felt would have helped the immersive quality and 3D effect, like the camera placement in relationship to set pieces in the foreground of the scene. Specifically trees and branches, spiny branches close to the lens of a 3D camera with the primary object in the mid or background makes for an amazing 3D picture. I understand there are so many working pieces to the complex puzzle and that set pieces most which are in place prior to the lighting and camera logistics/placement were possibly not an option. For the most part 3D films seems to be getting with better with each new release. We give the films 3D a solid B.
