Netflix 3D Streaming Coming Soon!

Posted on 01 February 2012 by admin

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says 3D streaming is “something we can do and we will be looking into it.” As for now there is no real word on when and if it will actually happen. With the rapidly growing 3D film market and the increased production of 3D blu-ray disc thanks to the success of Avatar,it would be a logical business move for Netflix to stream 3D movies. Hopefully Netflix’s infrastructure can handle the extra band width needed for streaming 3D movies.

I know that 3D Videos are 60 fps per video and show 2 different views (1 in each video stream at 60 fps per video stream), but Vudu & Blockbuster have been streaming 3D Movies for more than a Year now.

And both Youtube & Hulu have been streaming 3D Videos for over a year now also.

And Hulu said that they are getting 3D Movies later this year for Hulu Plus.

So why is Netflix the only Video streaming service that is not doing anything?

Today “Simply G” from “GamerXchange” reports that while booting up Netflix on his PS3 he ran into some sort of glich and on screen the icons “HD 5.1″ and “3D” appeared on screen implying some sort of audio and video option available. There have been rumors swirling around for some time that Netflix will stream 3D videos. “SimplyG’s discovery may just solidify some of the talk.
The 3D adoption in the U.S. has been a bit slow but it’s gaining momentum. The majority of new high end televisions will now feature 3D capability.
I think Netflix will stream 3D video in the near future. The reason for “Netflix’s” delay could have been due to the increase in cost for the needed extra bandwidth for transmission and last year the financial markets were hard on “Netflix” and the companies stock took a major hit. It may have been a bit difficult for “Netflix” to follow the trend of the other giant streaming vid companies when their financial position took such a massive hit and financial experts and shareholders lost a bit of confidence in the company. They do seem to be on a bit of a rebound so I would like to think Netflix will be streaming 3D in the near future.
