The BBC reports that Skype is celebrating 10 years of virtual communication. In an exclusive interview with Microsofts’s corporate vice-president for Skype, Mark Gillett. The following is an excerpt from the interview regarding Skype’s involvement into 3D video chat. “We’ve done work in the labs looking at the capability of 3D screens and 3D capture,” said Mark Gillett.
The BBC interview with Mark Gillett of Skype seems to suggest that the interest in 3D video conferencing is there but the technology on the hardware side is lagging a bit. The next excerpt is also from the BBC article. “We’ve seen a lot of progress in screens and a lot of people now buy TVs and computer monitors that are capable of delivering a 3D image. “But the capture devices are not yet there. We have it in the labs, we know how to make it work and we’re looking at the ecosystem of devices and their capability to support it in order to make a decision when we might think about bringing something like that to market.”
Remember we also reported earlier that Amazon was tinkering with a glasses-free 3D smartphone and companies like Dolby and MasterImage and DDD are readying glasses free delivery devices for the consumer market.
Just announced today Sept. 2nd 2013, DDD extends it’s TriDef 3D license to China’s Chongqing JOMVS Photoelectricity company for it’s glasses free 3D tablets and 3D devices. More to follow.
